2009-2010 Announcements

Congratulations to the Virginia Eta Chapter of Alpha Epsilon for receiving the 2009 Most Outstanding Chapter Award. This award would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our chapter's members who continue to participate in many different activities, including local and international.

Chapters are selected based upon their membership makeup, number of meetings held throughout the year, educational activities, service activities, professional activities, activities and goals planned for the next school year, and the mission of the individual chapter. The award comes with a $400 prize which will be used to fund activities in the upcoming year. Specifically the chapter plans to use this money to help complete our pilot sustainability kit which will be a tool K through 5 classrooms can use to learn about sustainability.

Award winners were announced at the ASABE Annual International Meeting held in June in Reno, Nevada.

Project:

Sustainability kit

Description:

Alpha Epsilon is leading an outreach initiative to work with nearby K-5 schools in promoting science and environmental education. The kit seeks to teach students about the concepts of sustainability. To help make this concept more understandable to young students, we have encompassed the key points within the framework of the life cycle of an apple. By following the path of an apple from the farm, to the store, and to consumption, students will learn about sustainable agriculture, energy, transportation, recycling, and composting.

Project:

Julia K. Pryde Memorial Garden

Description:

After the April 16th tragedy, Alpha Epsilon members created a memorial garden in honor of Julia Pryde (BS 2006, MS 2007). AE raised funds, organized planting, and implemented a maintenance and watering plan for the garden.
